So you’ve found the right photographer for your family portraits and now comes one of the toughest decisions of all… what to wear! These photos will hang on your walls and the walls of loved ones for years to come, so it’s definitely a big decision but it doesn’t have to be stressful! Follow these simple tips to help you pick out the perfect wardrobe.
1. Take a cue from your home! Your home is a direct reflection of you. The colors and style that you have chosen to decorate in are obviously something you are comfortable with, so why not start there! After all, this will help with the images matching once you hang them up in big frames on the wall.
2. Coordinated, not matching. Avoid having the whole family wearing jeans and a white t-shirt and turning into one blob of denim and stark white! Pick out one or two key colors then add in some complimentary colors and you’re good to go!
3. Accessorize. Statement necklaces, frilly scarves and fun hats are an awesome way to finish off your look.
4. Keep patterns and logos to a minimum. Fun patterns are awesome and they certainly bring some life to the image BUT don’t dress your whole family in patterns and logos or they will end up competing for attention rather than coordinating.
5. Layers add life! Textures and layers will add dimension and life to your wardrobe. Rather than sticking to plain cotton T’s, add in textures of flowy scarves, fitted belts, and leather jackets.
6. Location, location, location! Keep in mind the location that we’ll be shooting at. Bright colors will add life to an otherwise cold city session. While more muted and subdued colors will help to offset a more lush and green location!
7. Be sure to plan ahead for your session! After booking and setting the date of your session think ahead of the sizes your kids may be at that time and ensure that you have outfits that will work after they grow for the next few months. Set your clothing options aside about a week prior to your session to make sure everything is clean and ready for the session.
8. Keep it classic! Ultimately choose simple, classic clothing rather than trendy styles that will quickly date your photos.
9. Be true to who you are. After all these photos are meant to be a representation of you and your family.
10. Of course if you still have questions just ask! I frequently have families text or email images of the outfits they’re considering wearing just to have a second set of eyes confirm that all looks well.
