Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples | Sicily Travel

As you drive into the hilly region of Agrigento, you begin seeing these mammoth temples dedicated to the greek gods.

Once parked, you have a few options. You can either walk across the street (you actually walk under the highway) and start at the lower end of the temples. Or you can catch a ride to the far side which is up a bit of a hill and about a mile away and start at that end. We chose to do the later, because walking downhill is just way easier than uphill. Especially for my dad who’s in his 50’s and has a long healthy life of playing sports and working on submarines. The taxi ride over there was just a few bucks for the 4 of us and took us right to the ticket booth, well worth it to save our feet from having to walk all the way up AND all the way back down. This place is huge! It’s actually the largest archeological site in the world. The area includes 7 temples dating back to around 5th century B.C.  The park costs 10 Euro per person to enter and in my opinion is well worth it. If you can’t make a trip to Greece, this is kind of the next best thing right here in Sicily. These are some of the best kept temples in the world and the park itself is well kept making it a great day trip!

This little boy had us cracking up! He just ran unto the sculpture pointed and laughed for a few minutes straight!

My tip: Parking is a bit annoying here. It’s super easy to get in and park, but when you go to leave there is a machine to pay at rather than a human being. This is fairly new concept for such an old country and it’s obviously taking a bit of time for them to get used to. I waited behind a line of very confused people, but eventually the process was all sorted out and we were on our way. I really recommend having some small bills to pay for your time there rather than having to use your card or god forbid ask someone to break a 20!

I really recommend packing a lunch with you for your visit here. It’s a bit of a drive and if you don’t planning on going into the city of Agrigento, you won’t find much in the way of food around the site. That was our one big down fall on this trip! After we left the site we were all starving and had to drive around searching for a restaurant that might be open in the middle of the day. (Most restaurants here really don’t do lunch!) Luckily we were heading onto The Turkish Steps next and found a few little beach snack bars open there.
